I just adopted a hedgehog & need tips & advice on how to start handling him.?

I adopted a hedgehog from a family who bought him for their two young daughters. (don't know why you would get a hedgehog for young girls, but that's beside the point) I have researched on the internet, I bought a book on hedgehogs & read it today, but most of the information is about handling hedgies as babies. I would like real advice & tips from someone who has handled a hedgie that may have been in a neglectful or not so good living situation. what did you do to make him or her comfortable? did you finally bond? it's only been a day & i have lots of patience, just want to make sure i am only helping him & not hurting him or making him too nervous. he was kept in an aquarium with a tube to hide in. today i bought him a multilevel cage, a wheel, litter box, & all kinds of fun stuff. hmmm.....anything else you should know. they said he was born in the summer of 2010. oh, and today i put my fingers in the cage, he eventually stopped hissing, came up to my fingers, licked them a few times, then bit my finger. any tips or advice or stories are appreciated! thanks
